This conference is the fourth meeting organized by AEMMG (Association pour L'Etude de la Microécanique des Milieux Granulaires), following those at Clermont-Ferrand, France in 1989, Birminbham, England in 1993 and Durham, USA in 1997. Next, i.e. the first one in the coming new century will be held at Sendai, Japan (21st-25th May, 2001).
Sendai is the City of Trees and the biggest city in Tohoku district with a population of about 1,000,000 and is situated as the pivotal city of economy, science, culture and administration.
